BONES BRIGADE DOCUMENTARY IN THE WORKS
In 1984, The Bones Brigade video show was released. Once you went through the trouble of finding somewhere that you could spend the $30 bucks to buy it, you had to find someone who had a VCR to let you watch it with. But once you saw it, you would see skateboarding in a totally different light. Other important Bones Brigade videos were Future Primitive and The Search for Animal Chin. The Bones Brigade was made up of different personalities and different styles and they dominated skateboarding both on vert and street in the early to mid-eighties. Why it took so long to create a documentary on the interesting creation and ending of the Bones Brigade is strange, especially with all the hype on the Dogtown skateboard scene a few years ago. Like Dogtown, Powell Peralta were masters of imagery and marketing - the signature style and intense detail of the Vernon Courtland Johnson deck, t-shirt, and sticker graphics are highly collected and are still the benchmark for what skate art can be today. Not too many skate crews have had an impact like the original Bones Brigade.
Beginning in February of 2011, legendary skateboarders Stacy Peralta, Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Tony Hawk, MIke McGill, Lance Mountain and Tommy Guerrero will be working on a Bones Brigade documentary film. If you haven’t seen Stacy's Crips and Bloods doco, you definitely should. Plus other such Dogtown and the Z-Boys, Riding Giants and more.
On November 29th, these seven influential guys got together and sat down at Los Angeles International Airport, to discuss work on a documentary of their experience as skaters.
Simultaneously, a Powell-Peralta coffee table book is in the works. It will include the Bones Brigade, but also other things you knew and didn’t know about Powell-Peralta.
